Behind the door into the Flight Engineer's (Mechanic's) compartment is a fire extinguisher, the propeller de-icer tank, and pockets for manuals and record books. Located on the left of this photo (where the skin of the fuselage has been removed) would have been the APU and APU fuel tank. Also the multi-purpose crank for manual operation (if power failed) of the engine starter, anchor reel, and wingtip floats. On the starboard side was the cook stove. Spare parts and other equipment were also stowed here. Notice the two wing strut attachment points in the foreground of this photo. On the amphibious version (PBY-5A/B and OA-10A/B) the wheel main landing gear strut and wheel tucked in between the two struts, thereby limiting the amount of space the flight engineer had to move around.
