02 APRIL 1945
- First Lieutenant Robert P. Barbour, pilot of "Finder 1", a C-47 transport,
was directing the loading of his ship on Labo Strip when a disabled B-25 in attempting to
make a forced landing on the strip, overshot the field and crashed off the end of it. When
Lieutenant Barbour and his crew reached the scene, all of the nine occupants had managed
to escape. They were all injured, five seriously. After first aid was administered by
local nurses, Lieutenant Barbour then returned to Labo, arriving at 1920. Inasmuch as
there were no lights on the field, he elected to remain overnight. On the morning of 3
April, he then returned to his base at Morotai. [map]
Lieutenant Barbour displayed good
judgement in transporting the injured to the hospital immediately after the accident. The
two left behind were given emergency treatment and were better able to travel the
following morning.
