08 NOVEMBER
1944 - First Lieutenant
William
C. "Bill" Holbrook, pilot of
"Daylight
Two Two", took off from Morotai at 0615, met fighter cover in
Iligan Bay
and proceeded to Murcieleges Bay where they searched the shore line of Mindanao for a B-24
crew who were reported to have parachuted from their flak-damaged bomber, 7 November 1944.
At 1200 the crewmembers were sighted at 08°30'N, 123°30'W, waving from the shore.
Lieutenant Holbrook landed his plane in the Bay and taxied inshore. The survivors were
paddled out to the rescue plane in native canoes and appeared to be none the worse for
their experiences, with the exception of the radio operator, who was wounded in the leg.
The wound was not serious and he was able to walk. These men had been contacted by
Filipinos and were well cared for until their rescue. Dr. Santiago S. Calo, Dipolog,
Zamboanga, P.I. "A" Corps, Hq. rendered valuable medical service to the injured
man. All survivors were returned to Morotai, arriving in the rescue ship at 1600. They
reported that while on a bombing mission on an airodrome on Negros, they had been attacked
by a large formation of Jap fighters. Their ship was so badly damaged they were forced to
parachute from it. They believed the other two crewmembers were killed in the ship or on
the way down.
The following men,
all members of the 72nd Bomb Squadron, 5th Bomb Group,
were rescued:
(Pilot) 2Lt C. G. Taylor, (Co-Pilot) 2Lt J. J. Jobovial, (Navigator) 2Lt
M. C. Hayes, (Radio) S/Sgt F. Eades, (F) S/Sgt R. E. Davis, (AR) S/Sgt T. D. Covert, (G) S/Sgt
L. N. Cardwell, and (Engineer) Cpl E. F. Tipton
