MISSION REPORT - RESCUES - 02
[Back][Next]

11 JUNE 1945
First Lieutenant Robert T. Davis, pilot of "Playmate Three Seven", departed Puerto Princessa at 1035, landing at Sirinao Island, seven miles north of Malapackun off the NW coast of Palawan at 1200. The two survivors were Technical Sergeant Frank Day, 25th Liason Squadron, suffering from an injury to his right foot and Cpl George W. Junks of the same Squadron who sustained several lacerations of his head and right knee. The latters condition was serious but the administration of plasma restored his strength sufficiently to permit his evacuation.

The pilot stated that while flying at a minimum altitude over Siranao Island, a violent downdraft threw his ship out of control. During the recovery the left wing struck a tree and as he turned the ship sharply to the left to avoid a hill, he crashed into a fairly clear wooded area. They made their way to the beach and waited rescue two and one half hours later. Both men were returned to Puerto Princessa and transferred to the Station Hospital for treatment.
