1944 - First Lieutenant
Wayne L. Schandelmeier, pilot, and Lieutenant Colonel Wallace S. Ford, Co-Pilot, of
"Daylight One Three", took off
from Morotai at 0615 and proceeded to Murciealagos Bay with fighter cover. They landed at
Silis Point, but no survivors were found. Natives directed them to Naburos Island in
Murciealagos Bay. The rescue plane proceeded to the designated island and landed at 1215.
The ship was surrounded by friendly Filipinos who brought five surviving B-24 crew members
to the rescue ship. Machine guns, ammunition and other supplies were given to to Filipino
Military Commander. The Filipinos were ordered to scatter, the engines were started and
Daylight 13 took off for its base at 1300. The rescued men, members of the 5th Bombardment
Group, were in good physical condition. During their stay on the island they had been well
cared for by the Filipinos. These men had been forced to abandon their ship when it was
severely damaged by enemy fighters during a strike on Negros, 1 November 1944. The
whereabouts of the remaining members of the crew are unknown.
