12 NOVEMBER 1944 - First Lieutenant
George A, Barnes, pilot of "Daylight
One Four", took off from
Middleburg Island at 0925 to cover a strike on Ceram. When 35
minutes out, a P-38 buzzed him and radioed the Cat to follow. He had sighted a man on the
beach, just East of Dore Bay on the Northwest coast of New Guinea. On approaching the
survivor, the word "HELP" could be seen having been written in the sand in large
letters. Lieutenant Barnes landed off shore, launched a life raft in which two crew
members paddled ashore and took the survivor, Second
Lieutenant Daniel L. Shaw, 67th Fighter Squadron,
347th Fighter Group, aboard. Lieutenant Shaw stated that while covering a strike on Kendari, 11 November 1944, his right engine was damaged and he ditched his plane believing
that he would be unable to make his base. During the ditching, his Mae West was ripped
open and he sustained minor lacerations to his feet and ankles. He was returned to his
base at 1100.
