MISSION REPORT - RESCUES - 01

[Back][Next]

12 NOVEMBER 1944
First Lieutenant Hugh Pennington, pilot of "Daylight One Four", took off from Middleburg Island [Map] at 0925 to cover a strike on Ceram. When 35 minutes out, a P-38 buzzed him and radioed the Cat to follow. He had sighted a man on the beach, just East of Dore Bay on the Northwest coast of New Guinea. On approaching the survivor, the word "HELP" could be seen having been written in the sand in large letters. Lieutenant Barnes landed off shore, launched a life raft in which two crew members paddled ashore and took the survivor, Second Lieutenant Daniel L. Shaw, 67th Fighter Squadron, 347th Fighter Group, aboard. Lieutenant Shaw stated that while covering a strike on Kendari, 11 November 1944, his right engine was damaged and he ditched his plane believing that he would be unable to make his base. During the ditching, his Mae West was ripped open and he sustained minor lacerations to his feet and ankles. He was returned to his base at 1100.

DIARY ENTRY - "I was scheduled to cover a strike on Ceram today. Had to wait until a plane arrived from Morotai before I could go. Lt. Barnes went with us. Was an hour late taking off! About 35 minutes out a P-38 came along side & asked us to pick up a man he had spotted on the beach. We landed and picked him up. His name 2nd Lt. Dan Shaw from Oklahoma. I got dunked out of the raft going ashore after him. We canceled our mission to Ceram and came home. Lt. Barnes & I test hopped 880 and gave it 1-1/2 hours slow time." 1st Lt. Hugh Pennington
