MISSION REPORT - RESCUES - 04

20 DECEMBER 1944
Captain Clarence L. "Solie" Solander, pilot of "Playmate Four Two", departed Morotai at 0700 with orders to search Caranga and Warangani Bay Southern coast of Mindanao. Arrived Porgan Point and searched coast as far North as Baculin but made not sightings. At 1215 landed in bay North of Caranga, went ashore and interrogated natives who told him that eight Americans were at Guerilla Headquarters in the hills. Captain Solander took off and flew over the Headquarters, dropping message instructing them he would pick them up at Ceranga Point the following day. He arrived at Sarangani Bay at 1330 and searched until 1400, they went down under the overcast and flew along the the coast where he sighted an American flag. He landed, taxied inshore and rescued Ens W.F. Spring, Ens J. Kern, Amn 2/c C.S. Stafford and 1Lt M.A. Fomp. The Navy survivors were the last three men of the PBY crew that had gone down three days previously. Returned to base at 1800.

The following was written up by the Operations Officer after debriefing the crew and submitted with Squadron History :

0830:

Departed Morotai to search near Carago for Lt. Ganderson and also to search Sarangani Bay area for remainder of Navy PBY crew (3 men)

1020:

Approaching aircraft from SW - Scottie, couldn't contact him.

1120:

Arrived Persan Pt, flew north along coast up to Baculin and back covering the area 3 times attempting to attract attention.

1115:

Landed in bay north of Caraga and went ashore by native canoe to talk to the head man. He said 8 Americans were at HQ back in the hills. We took him with us to locate HQ which was approximately 10 miles inland.

1200:

After locating the place a message was attached to a Mae West and dropped to them. Landed 10 feet away from them informing them we would pick them up tomorrow around noon at Caraga Pt. The message was acknowledged by hand signals. They displayed the American Flag when we first circled.

1235:

Landed and put our guide ashore.

1300:

Airborne and heading for Sarangani Bay to complete second portion of mission. As we passed Cape San Augustine we fired a few rounds of 50 cal. at the radio station - unobserved results.

1330:

Arrived at Sarangani Bay - bay area closed in with rain. Made 1 attempt to search coast line but visibility forced us out. A second attempt was made with same results.

1345:

Orbited mouth of bay until 1400 when we went around and approached from the west side of the bay.

1400:

Managed to see when flying under 100 feet. Flew along the beach and spotted the American Flag waving. Lowered floats and landed picking up Spring, W.B., Ens.; Kern, J.M., Ens.; Stafford, C.A., AMM2C; Pomp, E.A. 1st Lt.

1425:

Had men aboard and were airborne. heading for base at 1430. We landed in light rain to pick survivors up. Survivors were in good condition. 3 water landings were made.

1800:

Landed home base
