Denzil L.
Kathman, was born in Chateau, Montana, the son of August
and Hazel Kathman. The family moved to Spokane and lived in North Hill until
1928, then moved to Lind where he graduated from Rogers High School in 1940.
He enlisted in the Air Force in 1941, graduated from Aerial Gunnery School,
then entered Air Force pilot training in 1942 and received his Army Air
Force wings. He was chosen as one of 10 Army Air Force pilots to be sent to
Naval pilot school to train in PBY flying boats and became part of the first
Army Air/Sea Rescue Squadron. He completed his training and received his
Navy pilot wings. He was one of a few who was able to wear both the Army and
Navy pilot wings.
Mr. Kathman flew 98 combat
missions for a total of 696 combat hours, and was awarded the Purple Heart
and several Air Medals. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Captain.
