HISTORY
- The Union Switch and Signal Company
of Swissvale, Pennsylvania, was the last organization to receive a wartime contract for Model 1911A1 pistols. Negotiations with Pittsburg Ordnance District resulted in a "Letter of Intent", dated April 6, 1942, for the manufacture of 200,000 pistols. The formal contract was signed on May 5th. Two floors of an existing building in their factory complex were arranged for production, and other building was set up for heavy machining operations.

A number of lunchbox pistols also found their way out of the plant. the first 102 production pistols were accepted by Ordnance inspectors in January 1943. Since all of the machine tools had not yet been delivered, these first pistols were assembled with a number of parts transferred from Colt and Remington Rand. When production reached full capacity in March, US&S manufactured the following seventeen parts:
