This is the first type cap for the US WWII canteens. The top was made of
aluminum like the canteen and the rivet was flush with the top of the cap.
This was problematic because with the top sticking out of the cover, it was
exposed to many things and the chain was often ripped off the canteen. The
2nd style was like the first, but made of plastic. It was later changed to
the 3rd style for this reason.
