02 SEPTEMBER
1944 - First Lieutenant
James F. "Scotty" Scott, pilot of
"Daylight One One", while patrolling in McClure Gulf off the Southern coast of
Vogelkop, received
a radio message from the Longer to proceed to a designated coordinate and search for an
Aussie pilot who had been forced to land his disabled plane in the Gulf. Lieutenant Scott
and his crew sighted the survivor at 1300 about two miles off shore. The pilot had been
unable to inflate his life raft, due to a fractured arm sustained while ditching his ship.
The rescued pilot was taken aboard the PBY. His arm was splinted by the Surgical
Technician aboard and he was made comfortable with sedatives, food and drinks. The pilot
had been in the sea approximately three hours and stated that his Beaufort Fighter had
been damaged by enemy fire, while he was strafing barges and Jap concentration points
along the coast. The pilot was taken to his
base at Noemfoor. He stated upon being taken
aboard, "It is jolly well to know you chaps are around".
