[Back][Next]

06 DECEMBER 1944
First Lieutenant Larry E. Bormann, pilot of "Playmate Two One", departed Morotai at 0500 with orders to cover strikes on Negros. On the way, he landed at Dipolog and left mechanics and spare parts for the repair of a rescue plane forced to remain there overnight when a tire blew out on landing, 5 December 1944. Lieutenant Bormann proceeded toward the target but at 1145, his escort led him back to Dipolog to pick up Sergeant Edward A. Johnson, of the Second Emergency, who sustained a broken leg while attempting to change the tire of the disabled PBY. The Flight Surgeon splinted the leg, took him aboard and made him comfortable. Four survivors were also picked up at Dipolog: Lieutenant Lelew Jr., 30th Fighter Squadron, 8th Fighter Group, who had been shot down over Mindanao, 01 November 1944. Lieutenant Richard Cook, who had escaped from a Jap POW ship when it was torpedoed off Sindanga Straight, 7 September 1944. Lieutenant Cook had been a prisoner of the 101st Division, and Florentino Baguin, Judge of the Civil Court of the Philippines. All men were in fairly good shape and were landed at Morotai at 1710. Sgt Johnson was taken to the 155th Station Hospital.
