MISSION REPORT - RESCUES - 01

[Back][Next]

18 NOVEMBER 1944
First Lieutenant Denzil L. Kathman, pilot of "Daylight Two Two", took off from Pitoe Strip at 0800 for the purpose of acting as rear cover for a fighter and bomber strike, the orbit point to be Sanghie Island. On approaching Piaro Island, which is North of the Northwest tip of the Celebes, his P-47 escort waggled his wings indicating that he had sighted something. Lieutenant Kathman followed him and sighted a man on the beach of Piaro Island. He landed and waited for a native to bring the survivor to the rescue ship. The survivor, First Lieutenant Henry Storino, 44th Fighter Squadron, 18th Fighter Group, bailed out of his P-38 on 15 November 1944 while returning from a strafing mission over Borneo. His fuel became exhausted and he parachuted into the open sea and swam ashore where he was cared for by friendly natives until his rescue. Lieutenant Storino also brought back valuable information concerning the strength and disposition of the Japs in the Northeast Celebes.
